He became a key member of the notorious East Village art movement during the 1980s alongside friends and peers Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. Whilst growing up, Scharf was fascinated by futuristic visions of 1950s America. Its influence emanating through the television set of every household. Subsequently Scharf has been influenced by all art movements of the 20th-century, including Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art, the latter reflected in his appropriation of cartoon characters from television shows like the Flintstones and Jetsons. Though Scharf’s brightly coloured imagery is generally viewed as playful, he has remarked that darker themes remain, existing beneath the surface of his works, yet visible upon closer inspection.
