Ron Arad, from 1992 to 2026
Opera Gallery Monaco is pleased to present an exhibition spanning more than 30 years of work by the renowned designer Ron Arad.
From the moment he first transformed a car seat salvaged from a scrapyard into his Rover chair, Arad has been driven by curiosity. That early creation set the tone for a practice defined by playful exploration, technical rigour, and the refusal to be constrained by disciplinary boundaries. For Arad, chairs, tables, and sculptures are not separate categories; they are all expressions of the same questioning impulse, each an experiment in form, material, and perception.
The metamorphosis of common furniture
In After Spring and Before Summer (1992), the subtle curves and elliptical forms suggest movement and narrative, a choreography of material and imagination that invites the viewer to linger and explore. The Good Ping Pong Dining Table (2023) transforms a familiar domestic object into a stage for interaction, where functional use and aesthetic delight converge; the table is first seen as sculpture, only later as a game, a duality that Arad cultivates across his work. The Big Easy (2023) armchair, meanwhile, epitomises his fluid approach to scale, volume, and material. Born of metal, resin, and occasionally found objects, it is both furniture and performance, every new iteration asserting itself with a personality all its own.
Where shape marries material
Stainless steel in works such as Linguine (2020) demonstrates how material presence can dictate experience. Its surface, bending and folding in unexpected ways, converses with the environment and the viewer, making the work simultaneously visual, spatial, and tactile. Similarly, Minimalistic Rodin’s Thinker (2022) and This Mortal Coil (1992) reflect Arad’s engagement with sculptural tradition, paying homage while reinterpreting iconic forms through the lens of contemporary materials and sensibilities. Across all these works, the human scale remains central, whether in the intimate interaction of furniture or the commanding presence of sculpture in space.
This exhibition offers an opportunity to witness the vitality of a career defined by curiosity, audacity, and an unwavering refusal to accept limits. Here, Arad’s works are dialogues between artist and material and between the work and the viewer, placed at the crossroads of art, design, and everyday life.
