David Magán and the Perception of Colour in ‘Coloramas’ at ICAS Sevilla
Seville
02 April 2026
The exhibition 'Del color en el arte (Coloramas)', on view from 27 February to 17 May 2026 at ICAS Sevilla in Seville, brings together a wide-ranging exploration of colour as both material and concept. Presented as a thematic group exhibition, it examines how contemporary artists deploy chromatic language to shape perception, space, and emotional response, offering visitors an immersive encounter with colour in its many registers.
Spanning diverse practices, 'Coloramas' foregrounds colour as a structuring principle. Works on view engage with optical effects, spatial illusion, and perceptual instability, underscoring the enduring relevance of colour theory within contemporary art. Through abstraction, light-based interventions, and sculptural approaches, the exhibition traces how colour can operate as a dynamic force—at once sensory and intellectual—capable of redefining the viewer’s relationship to the artwork and its surroundings.
Within this context, David Magán’s work stands out for its precise investigation of light, transparency, and geometry. Known for his use of methacrylate and layered structures, Magán constructs compositions that shift according to the viewer’s position, activating colour as a perceptual event rather than a fixed attribute. His practice engages directly with the legacy of geometric abstraction while introducing a sensorial dimension that emphasises movement and optical variation.
This presentation also offers a timely introduction to Magán’s forthcoming solo exhibition with Opera Gallery in Madrid. Titled 'David Magán, Perceptual Axes', and opening 7 May, the exhibition will mark the artist’s first solo presentation with the gallery. Building on the perceptual concerns evident in 'Coloramas', it is set to further explore the interplay between structure, light, and chromatic experience that defines his practice.
