ZHONG Biao

The Chinese painter Zhong Biao, was born in the city of Chongqing in the Sichuan province in 1968, the city in which he carried out his primary and secondary schooling.

In 1987, he enrolled in the Chinese Fine Arts Academy in Hangzhou where he attended painting classes in the oil painting department. He graduated four years later. As soon as he left the Fine Arts Academy, he started to exhibit in group shows in China, Thailand, Belgium, Taiwan, the USA, England, Holland, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Brazil, Peru, Germany, Chile and in Russia, and he also took part in the leading Chinese art biennials.
In Zhong Biao's painterly approach, we find a positioning of ideas that tend towards an authentic assimilation and fusion, between a look at the historical past and a contemporary, vanguard, seeking out. In his works, the artist paints strong and vibrant images expressing the passage from a traditional society to a modern and advanced one, from which there also emerges an authentic artistic aesthetic as well as autonomy.

However, in his approach, Zhong Biao reinforces through the objects' superimposition, the monochrome of the canvases' depth and thus obtains a tension between a visually very strong contrast, by means of a simplified symbolism, close to that of Pop Art. The Chinese artist thus captures the hidden emotion whose imagery is recognizable and defined as an icon of our times.

We often find images floating in sorrow and in joy, with a wild expressivity, then a touch of color in counterpoint, in which the artist emphasizes the cruelty, or the material and physical sufferings, of the groups represented through his artistic filter.

Zhong Biao's body of work is the incarnation of the artist's taste for urban scenes showing young women who look like top models, summoning up the wanderings of a cynical youth culture.

As well as over a hundred representative group shows all over the world, Zhong Biao has also had very many one-person shows in galleries and museums. His first solo exhibition entitled " The Fable of Life " was shown in 1996 in the Art Museum of the Fine Arts Academy of Sichuan in Chongqing, China, followed by an exhibition in the Schoeni Art Gallery in Hong Kong, China in 1997, then an exhibition called " A Chance Existence " in the Art Scene China Gallery in Hong Kong, China, in 2001, followed by " Zhong Biao Solo Exhibition " in the Art Scene China Gallery in Shanghai in 2003 and 2004, " Ubiguity " in Shanghai in 2004, " Zhong Biao " in Tokyo, Japan in 2006, " Zhong Biao : American Debut " in San Francisco, USA and finally " Splendid… Over 10 Years of Exploration " in London, England.

For his artistic activities Zhong Biao has received awards and prizes, including: The First Nominative of Fine Arts and Documenta (Documenta Award) award by the Art Museum of Hubei Fine Arts Academy in Wuhan in 2004; The 10th National Exhibition of Chinese Arts (Recognition Award) awarded by the Guangdong Art Museum in Guangzhou in 2004.
A great many books, catalogues, monographs, publications and articles in the artistic media have been devoted to Zhong Biao's works, which are to be found in important private and public collections throughout all the continents.
