POLIAKOFF Serge

POLIAKOFF (1900 - 1969)

Born in Moscow, Serge Poliakoff came to the West during the Russian Revolution.

Often found in the center of the Geometric Abstraction movement, Poliakoff did not limit himself to this form of expression. His scrupulously defined colored canvas, his precious hues, all remind us of ancient icons.

Oriental accents allowed him to create a life’s work steeped in meditation and nostalgia. His shapes cut into space, creating so many surfaces that perfectly fit together, one on top of the other.

Poliakoff’s paintings are arranged in perfect simplicity, with warm colors, mainly red and incandescent ochre. Poliakoff went Abstract as of 1938; his works became almost monochromatic between 1947 and 1948.

Some experts interpreted his creation as making references to mineral and vegetable forms. A concept he always strictly challenged. He liked to assert with force that “nature destroys everything. To control nature, one must be strong and reserved in all things…One can look upon nature with different eyes.”

An international market value for this painter so well-loved by art collectors everywhere
