LUO BROTHERS

Luo Brothers

The three Luo Brothers, Luo Weidong, Luo Weiguo, and Luo Weibing, come from Guilin, GuangXi Province, China. They began to collaborate, live and work in Beijing from 1996.

Luo Brothers were responsible for some of Chinese most provocative and renowned contemporary art; their work has been instrumental in establishing major trends in Chinese art such as the ‘ Political Pop Art’.

For the Luo Brothers the work, series ‘World Famous Brand Name’, signifies a sentiment behind official party views and a developing capitalism from 90ies in China, whatever brand it comes into the Mainland China, such as trademark western CoCa, McDonald’s and BMW, are sanctioned and guarded by Red Army service people, Mao’s symbol and party role models.

Luo’s paintings are stylistically aligned with a ‘pop’ sensibility, charged by political fervor and informed by generations of local traditional craft-making techniques.
