LORIOZ Jeanne
Curled up in their languid dreams, absorbed in their sea-side activities, Jeanne Lorioz' nymphs turn their pretty backs to us so that we can delight in their voluptuous curves. Chiseled with tenderness in the morning's blue-grey metallic light or decked out in the coppery gold of a late summer afternoon, their delicate postures evoke the elegance of antique scholars and the arabesque movements of Ingres-like virgin slaves. Like the Baigneuse Valpinçon or the portraits of Mme. Moitessier, the generous bodies of these women are so many pretexts for the artist to escape from standard canons of beauty, playing as she does with carnal, unusual lines. To sublimate their fleshly profiles, it seems like certain Flemish and Italian artists from the 15th century have whispered a few of their secrets...
The artist depicts such round beauties in daily moments that are both trivial and capricious: they chirp, pamper themselves, squabble, do their tasks, question themselves, contemplate the world...and sleep! The Graces of Jeanne populate her pictorial universe with sensuality and humor. By their sculptural dances and poses, they proudly present themselves to the on-looker's amused eye, so many new goddesses...our very own Callipygian Venuses from the 21st century! But their extraordinary anatomy sometimes change into marvelously gluttonous objects...With Epicureanism and impertinence, Jeanne pays tribute to the weaker sex's joie de vivre, its maternal bountifulness and friendly generosity.
Born in 1954, Jeanne Lorioz studied for three years at the Superior School of Applied Arts in Paris. Courses in modeling, anatomy, sketching of live models, the works. It was all passionate, even if amidst a much too conceptual mind-set, which did not appeal to Jeanne-the-meticulous. It took ten years of latent incubation, of experimenting with interior decorating, before she rekindled the desire to paint. Today, Jeanne has created her own universe peopled exclusively with curvaceous women with a potential for the comic.
