LOMBARDI Pedro
Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, Pedro LOMBARDI has been living in Paris for over 20 years. Exercising his curiosity of individuals, his photographic work begins with various reportages in Russia, the USA, Morocco, Canada and New Caledonia. For three years he has worked for the modern suburban town of Torcy, increasing his knowledge of the different ethnic communities in French society. Throughout this period he expressed himself, in both the social and cultural fields, through theatre, music and dance.
Working freelance, his photos are published in CD sleeves, newspapers, magazines and books. He also works with a number of theatre and dance companies, ranging from the fringe scene to the prestigious Comédie-Française.
Because of his origins and cosmopolitan background, he has a passion for the universal language of music. He has collected over the past years photographic work on Candombe, the traditional Afro-Uruguayan beat and “communal art” transmitted down from generation to generation (this was shown at the FNAC Champs-Elysées in Paris and during the Festival International de Biarritz in 1998).
Continuously creating links between Europe and Latin America, he started working on the “Tango” theme in Paris in 1998 (exhibition and UNESCO catalogue, 1999), and has since then pursued with the two cities that gave birth to this culture of music and dance: Montevideo and Buenos Aires. His approach is both of an aesthete and amateur tango dancer. Like him, he looks at the woman he invites. And in this relation as in a dance, all the sensuality, complicity and intimacy that make up the magic of a Tango intertwine.
This work is now published as an art book “Invitation au Tango” (Editions du Collectionneur, Paris 2005) and a musical compilation including different Uruguayan artists “Invitation to Tango” (Wagram Music).
The famous French lingerie brand “Aubade” offered him great freedom in the making of the Agenda Aubade 2004, Leçons de Tango (Editions de la Martinière, 2003). This “little book” has been sold out in 28000 copies and has now become a “collector”.
A selection of this work is now shown in large format and limited prints at the Opera Gallery in Paris and New York.
