LHOTE (1885-1962) Andre
Andre LHOTE (1885 – 1962)
Born in Bordeaux, André Lhote would spend an entire decade studying under a sculptor-decorator.
After dabbling in Cubism, Lhote would become one of the most respected thinkers of the art world, leading him to open his own Academy which would welcome many soon-to-be-famous artists. His ideal was to hand down a certain tradition in painting, and many of his students would challenge his theories. But Lhote would still have a strong influence over many artists: the very doubts, questions and desire to understand why they disagreed with their master were the factors which shaped the personality and penchants of his students.
The author of numerous books on art, known for his general knowledge on many varied subjects, Lhote suffered from all the attention paid to his publications, to the detriment of his paintings.
Lhote’s version of cubism would evolve into the “plastic metaphor”. Bright colors replaced flat tints during his synthetic Cubist period.
For a long time present on the international art market, Professor André Lhote is an exception in the history of painting.
