LEKINFF Linda
Born in Paris of French-Brazilian parentage, Linda Le Kinff started painting at the age of 20. She travelled extensively to India, Tibet, Mexico and Italy in the 70s. According to her, Tuscany had a great influence on her oeuvre and Italy turned her into a painter. Florence, Sienne, Volterra - the light and the "wise" madness of the country started it all.
From then on she lived and worked in Italy, learning ancient techniques like egg painting, tempera and gold leaf method. Masters in both Florence and Livorne taught her. She also had an apprenticeship in wood and copper engraving, as well as modern techniques in acrylic and aerography with Zancanaro and Chipola at Franco Cantini's workshop.
In 1975, Le Kinff learnt lithography in Paris. She met Brayer, Aipiri, Corneille and La Picque. She worked with Commere and met Myles Cook with whom she signed a contract for Christie's Editions of London. Many of her lithographs were published. At the Fukuoka exhibition the next year, she met Okamato Taro, the Japanese Picasso, as well as Sugiyama Yu who initiated her experiments with sand and sumi.
She exhibited at the Sphinx Gallery in Anvers, Belgium, in 1980 with Leonore Fini who said about Le Kinff's works," I have the pleasure of meeting Linda Le Kinff for whom the future seems promising - her romantic imagination, the softness of her." After the exhibition, she went back to school in South Tyrol where her interest in paint, polished and varnished wood using a special material made of casein was nurtured. She applied this media on her paintings while retaining the classic expression. The result is a refreshingly creative and rich synthesis. Asked which artist inspires her the most, Le Kinff claims that she has great admiration for the sensuous paintings of Matisse. As a student, she spent hours studying his works. She has also been influenced by the elegance of a Modigliani painting; the strength of a Schiele; and the Cubist approach of a Braque. When observing her works, one sees that Le Kinff revisits the Cubist movement by disregarding perspective.
Le Kinff's favourite theme is women, or rather the "ideal woman". In her paintings, one sees graceful women in leisurely pursuits, relaxed and beautiful. Instead of presenting beauty according to the canon of her period, she depicts sensuous full-figured women who are at times pear-shaped. In this aspect, one sees the influence of Italian Renaissance art.
Like her pure and schematic outlines, the vibrant colours are characteristic of her style. This can be attributed to her Brazilian heritage. A unique mixture of pigments makes it possible for her to obtain these signature deep hues which add a decorative dimension to her paintings. In Le Kinff's opinion, these elements create a poetic intensity.
