LAURENCIN Marie

Marie LAURENCIN (1883 - 1956)

Born in Paris, it was at a very young age that Marie Laurencin would visit the famous Bateau Lavoir, a sordid squat located on the Butte Montmartre at the beginning of the 20th century, which welcomed such famous residents as Picasso, Juan Gris, Modigliani, Max Jacob, Mac Orlan, and others. It was a place where poetry and literature mutually inspired each other.

Very quickly, the artist would develop her own style: young girls depicted in a defused fairy-like, densely colored halo.

Laurencin would earn the reputation of being Cubism’s muse and met with great success in Japan where a museum was built in her honor.

The mistress of master poet Apollinaire, having played such an important role in the history of Cubism, Laurencin gave us works of tremendous quality, which survived the jungle of the 20th century art market… itself an amazing accomplishment.

The Marie Laurencin Museum, entirely dedicated to the artist’s genius was opened in Japan, where the artist has always been greatly appreciated.

One of the rare women painters to have achieved top class notoriety on the international art market.
