KOH Myung Keun
KOH Myung Keun was born in 1964, graduated from the Seoul National University majoring in sculpture, and afterwards the Pratt Institute, New York, majoring in Photography. KOH used be a professor at the Art School of Kookmin University from 1998 to 2007, and he is currently a full-time artist who lives and works in Seoul. By transferred photo images onto a OHP film, then gluing them onto plexiglass, KOH's work, which is named “Photo Sculpture”, forms a unique category: the two-dimensional flattened images are transformed into a three-dimensional structure where the images on all sides overlap. Each side of the work is transparent; therefore, by viewing at an angle and with the effects of the lighting, the images vary according to the viewpoint, which stimulates the imagination of the viewers. The instant image that stimulates illusion is combined with the volume of the structure, which give rise to the form of the sculpture. After composing a work, KOH chooses proper images from his over 80,000 photo archives and composes the sides by countless overlapping, and the work is completed by soldering. KOH started his photo sculpture by taking photos of old and abandoned buildings in Brookyln, New York, and his work had developed to include themes of Roman sculptures, historic museums, and later on his interest in nature. KOH's works are currently categorized under the series of Nature, Building, and Body. Including the most recent solo exhibition at Espace Louis Vuitton, Taipei, KOH Myung Keun has participated in many exhibitions, such as those held in the Hanmi Museum of Photography, the Kim Chong Young Art Museum and other international exhibitions. KOH's work has been collected in the Bill Gates MicroSoft Foundation, the Google Initiating Member, the National Contemporary Art Museum and the Seoul Art Museum.
