GORBACHEV Yuri
He was born in 1948 in USSR, near St Petersburg.
Inspired by the brilliant jeweled colors of Byzantine art and by the works of richly textured canvases with oil and gold.
This beautifully printed first monograph on Gorbachev presents 100 full-color plates divided into thematic sections spanning the artist’s career, including his portraits of czars of the Romanov dynasty, canvases inspired by the ancient tradition of Russian Orthodox icon painting, and recent paintings that express his fascination with the landscapes and people of Bali.
Gorbachev’s artistic world is woven from legends, fairy-tales and folk images, half dream and half reality. This world is always gentle, harmonious and beautiful, whatever the images and stories one chooses to take from it; idyllic landscapes with churches and towers; vivid still life with fruits, flowers, parrots…; wood cuts of erotic or playfully rude scenes.
There is a touching naivete and an almost childlike innocence in many of his works.
All Gorbachev’s works vibrate with a theatrical or carnival quality. They reflect the rich Russian culture of the grotesque, of folk humour; explaining why the circus became one of his favourite subjects.
In his paintings, you will always find humour and that joyous, positive energy that he has taken from a certain abstract and difficult-to-define concept and turned into a factor in his artistic achievements.
