DERAKSHANI Reza
Painter, musician and performance artist. Born in 1952 in Sangsar, Iran. Studied Visual Arts at the Tehran University. First solo exhibition in 1970, in the prominent Ghandriz Gallery in Tehran, he was only 19 years old. Lives in between Tehran, USA and Europe.
Reza Derakshani's extraordinary artistic talent was recognized at a very young age as he was receiving commissions at the age of nine. His artistic career progressed and his work moved towards an exploration of the natural world, which has put him back in touch with his Persian heritage. These works are centred on birds, mountains, flowers and trees. The natural elements of Reza?s works are an expression of the Persian culture, literature and poetry.
Trees refer to the Tree of Life, the Tree of Knowledge, and the Tree of the Universe. With their roots deep in the earth, a tree comes back to life from death. In Persian mythology the Tree of Life is at the centre of heaven and guarded by a lion and a wild goat. A fig tree is the most sacred, whilst a pomegranate tree represents passion and fertility.
Being brought up in a nomad family on the mountains had an enormous impact on his admiration for natural beauty.
Reza is considered as one of the masters of the contemporary Iranian art
