DE LEMPICKA Tamara (1898-1980)

Tamara de LEMPICKA (1898 - 1980)

Born in Warsaw, Poland, Tamara de Lempicka first studied at the Saint Petersburg Academy before moving to Paris to study under Maurice Denis and André Lhote.

As with her stylized portraits from the thirties, Tara de Lempicka’s work was influenced by Cubism according to Braque and Picasso, and would be affected by Fernard Léger’s “tubism” movement.

Her distinct painting style perfectly illustrates the influence of the “Années Folles”. Her very intimate touch, married with stark colors, enabled Lempicka to pave her own way and leave her mark in the art world.

The artist settled down in the United States after the Second World War. This would provoke a subtle yet definite change in her style, with the almost systematic use of red-brown tones.

Lempicka remains unique, a dazzling meteorite from an era of excess, her every movement so much fodder for the society pages, which loved to tout her beauty while gossiping over her circle of famous friends (including Tyrone Power, Greta Garbo and others).

A retrospective dedicated to Lempicka’s work was held in Paris in 1972. Her paintings are highly sought after by an educated clientele.
