CORNEILLE

CORNEILLE (1922 - )

Born in Liege, Belgium in 1922, Corneille was one of the spearheads of the COBRA movement, an association of European artists that came together again to form a new Ecole de Paris, famous for post-war, triumphant abstract art. Exacerbated and exuberant art swept through Europe via its Scandinavian headquarters which gave the group its name: CO for Copenhagen, BR for Brussels and A for Amsterdam.

These young creators fed off somewhat primitive emotions, symbols, while also claiming to represent Germanic Expressionism and the surrealist experience.

Corneille lived with Appel and Constant in what were squalid living conditions in front of Paris’ famous Halle aux Cuirs (covered market selling leather goods). This is where Corneille would develop his own style of “unrealistic” art, full of colored fish, birds, human shapes and boasting a distinct graphic style. Adept at lithography and ceramic art, Corneille used various techniques as so much fodder for his paintings. Color added to a typically “Corneille” sketch made Corneille one of COBRA’s most poetic and literary-minded artists.

His art has inspired numerous works and been the subject of several exhibitions in France and abroad.

Corneille remains a solid commodity on the art market today, as well as a painter who has left an indelible mark in art history books.
