CLAVE Antoni

CLAVE (1913 - 2005)

Born in 1913 in Barcelona, Spain, Clavé has lived a quiet life. Residing in Saint Tropez since 1964, the artist is famous for spraying canvas with vibrant, pure color, canvas that has been primed with torn, wrinkled pieces of glued paper.

Clavé, influenced by Vuillard, had a true revelation but didn’t realize it at the time (on the day the Americans landed) while spending the day with Picasso. After seeing the man and his work, Clavé was able to grasp many essential truths.

His paintings, for a long time representational, lean towards the abstract, even if the artist himself does not consider his work as abstract art. Clavé defines himself more as a craftsman than an artist.

A true alchemist of the art world, a magician in the field, Clavé has succeeded in creating a lifetime work, after having for many years delved in poster art and set decoration for the French opera, theater, and ballet.

There is even a ‘Clavé red’: a color that has fascinated people for years. In the nineteen-nineties, his palette turned monochromatic: black, blue and white.

Clavé quickly acquired a certain authority which increases with time. Considered today as one of the greatest Catalan artists of all time, Clavé’s market value continues to grow.
