CHU TEH-CHUN
CHU TEH-CHUN (1922 - )
Born in 1922 in the province of Jiangsu, Chu Teh-Chun studied at the School of Fine Arts in Hangzhou, arriving on French soil in 1955.
He would quickly exhibit his works at the ‘Salon des Réalites Nouvelles’, the showcase location for abstract art, a big success in Paris at the time. An entire room was dedicated to his works at the famous Sao Paulo Two-Year Celebration in 1970.
The beauty of a gesture so pure, automatic reflexes and their instantaneous honesty are standard elements of traditional Chinese art.
In the fifties, Michel Ragon, one of the influential art critics of the period, would quite appropriately qualify Chu Teh-Chun’s work as “abstract landscaping”. Vague recollections of age-old scenes from nature are translated onto canvas by freely orchestrated, full rhythms using pleasant tones and good taste.
The artist rediscovered the secret of ancient Chinese art where the waves so dear to oriental artists capture both the power and the dream, the voluptuous stroke and the foam.
Elements overlap and metamorphose in a Chu Teh-Chun painting. Nature, the oceans, the world and the cosmos all become one. And therein lays the strength of the artist’s genius, one of the most famous Chinese painters, along with Zao-Wouki, living in the West today. In China, people are desperate to get hold of a Chu Teh-Chun. His price literally ripped through the market’s roof in 2004.

He entered the Beaux arts school in Hangzou where He mastered in the chinese traditional style and then turned himself in the occidental work of art.He became then a teacher in Nankin and then settled in Taipei.
In 1955, he came to live in Paris and discovers abstract art and became famous at this period and exhibits worldwide since then.
In 1976, he trains in calligraphy works as he used too in the past.and Is exhibited as well in Asia.
In 1987, a major solo exhibition is realized in Taipei, in 1994 in Singapore.He is considered and recognized as a talented painter.
