APPEL Karel

Karel Appel was one of the most active founding members of “COBRA”, the very first artistic and literary anarchist movement that sprang to life in Europe after World War II. From Parisian life in the 50s, Karel Appel would settle down in New York in 1957. Appel’s career got off to an amazing start when the MOMA quickly purchased seven of his large format works. He lived and worked in New York while becoming one of COBRA’s most vehement spokespersons.

Vibrant colors, sharp strokes and a heavy penchant for impasto are typical of Appel’s style: Appel has often been quoted as saying “The material is what’s important”. The material gives us the image.

The COBRA style, so popular with art collectors, depicts human beings as marionettes, animals and children. Appel drenched his works in bold colors. An intuitive, introverted artist, refusing all sorts of dogmatism, Appel toyed with thick, rich materials on a violent chromatic palette where symbols and lines collide.

The Karel Appel Foundation is located in Amsterdam, the artist’s birthplace.
