This China ink on paper painting is one of the many and varied works of French painter Jean Dubuffet. Born into a family of wine merchants, the artist became interested in painting at an early age. He studied at the Le Havre School of Fine Arts and then the “Académie Julian” in Paris. Jean Dubuffet abandoned painting on a number of occasions before returning to it and was particularly keen on Art brut or raw art. This was because he wanted to create spontaneous works uninfluenced by traditional aesthetic criteria.
