Born in Le Havre, Raoul Dufy, who loved painting, took evening classes at the city’s School of Fine Arts. Having secured a grant, he was able to go off to study in Paris. During his career, he met numerous artists who would have a significant influence on the development of his style. One of the distinctive characteristics of his painting is the importance given to color. Provence and several Mediterranean towns provided a rich source of inspiration. “Nature morte au panier de poires” was produced in 1914 and is on display in London.
